2021.1 Versal and Zynq UltraScale+ MPSOC: PetaLinux does not mount full rootfs when boot INITRD images are built using the template method

In the 2021.1 PetaLinux release, when you build the Versal and Zynq UltraScale+ MPSOC/RFSOC projects using the template method and boot the INITRD images using JTAG, SD or QSPI boot mode by default, the full rootfs is not mounted.

解决方案

This is a known issue in the 2021.1 PetaLinux tools.

Root Cause:

When you create and build the project using the template flow for Versal and Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC/RFSoC devices, the PetaLinux tools will by default set the INITRAMFS/INITRD Image Name to petalinux-initramfs-image.

When booting INITRD images, it uses the tiny ramdisk(ramdisk.cpio.gz) file system and later searches for an EXT4 base full rootfs mounted on the SD.

If an EXT4 based rootfs is not found then tiny rootfs will be mounted, but all of the peripherals will not be initialized.

To work around this issue, follow the below steps using any one of the method:

Method 1:

1) Change the INITRAMFS/INITRD Image Name from petalinux-initramfs-image to petalinux-image-minimal:

$ petalinux-config ---> Image Packaging Configuration ---> Root filesystem type --->(INITRD)
$ petalinux-config ---> Image Packaging Configuration ---> INITRAMFS/INITRD Image Name (petalinux-image-minimal)

2) Clean the distro image sstate cache and rebuild the image recipes:

$ petalinux-build -x cleanall
$ petalinux-build

Method 2:

JTAG boot mode: Pass additional rootfs options as shown below.

1) Zynq UltraScale+ MPSOC/RFSOC BSP pre-built images:

$ petalinux-boot --jtag --prebuilt 3 --fpga --bitstream <plnx-proj-root>/pre-built/linux/images/system.bit --rootfs <plnx-proj-root>/pre-built/linux/images/rootfs.cpio.gz.u-boot --hw_server-url TCP:<hostname>:3121'

2) Zynq UltraScale+ MPSOC/RFSOC Template/BSP project built images:

Copy the rootfs.cpio.gz.u-boot to the SD FAT32 partition along with the other images.

1) Zynq UltraScale+ MPSOC/RFSOC or Versal BSP pre-built images:

$ cd <plnx-proj-root>/pre-built/linux/images/
$ cp BOOT.BIN boot.scr Image rootfs.cpio.gz.u-boot system.dtb <PATH_TO_SD_FAT32_PARTITION_MOUNT_POINT>
