Vivado cannot write to the .Xilinx directory on an Ubuntu Linux 14.04 LTS (64-bit) machine when creating a project.
The Xilinx installer creates a hidden folder in the user home directory called .Xilinx but leaves the Linux "owner" of that directory as "root".
This produces numerous error messages when Vivado starts, stating that it cannot write to the .Xilinx directory.
To resolve this issue, the owner of the folder can be manually changed to the Linux username:
sudo chown -R <username> ~/.Xilinx
Vivado will then work without issues.
Other useful information related to running Vivado on the Ubuntu operating systems can be found in the attached .pdf file (for example, setting the desktop icons, etc.).
Note: Root permission is only required in order to install cable drivers.
In Vivado 2015.1 the cable driver installation has been removed from the main Vivado installation and it is recommended that Vivado 2015.1 and later not be installed as root.
